Tourism is a critical component of economic growth and cultural exchange, but it is also highly vulnerable to crises, including natural disasters, pandemics, and political instability. Abuja, as Nigeria’s capital city, serves as a hub for both domestic and international tourists, offering attractions such as the Aso Rock, National Mosque, and cultural festivals. Despite its potential, the tourism sector in Abuja faces recurrent crises that disrupt operations and diminish its appeal to tourists. Effective crisis management strategies are vital to ensuring the sustainability and resilience of tourism businesses in the face of such challenges (WTTC, 2023). Globally, successful destinations have demonstrated that proactive planning and robust management strategies can mitigate the impact of crises on tourism.

Statement of the Problem
Abuja’s tourism sector lacks comprehensive crisis management strategies to address the recurring challenges it faces. From security concerns to public health emergencies like COVID-19, these crises have significantly impacted tourist inflow and revenue generation. Many tourism businesses in Abuja operate with limited resources and without contingency plans, exacerbating the impact of crises (NBS, 2024). Additionally, there is a scarcity of research on the effectiveness of existing crisis management strategies within the sector, making it difficult to develop policies tailored to Abuja’s unique challenges.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of crises on Abuja’s tourism sector.

  2. To analyze existing crisis management strategies employed by tourism businesses in Abuja.

  3. To recommend effective measures for enhancing crisis resilience in Abuja’s tourism sector.

Research Questions

  1. What is the impact of crises on Abuja’s tourism sector?

  2. What crisis management strategies are currently employed by tourism businesses in Abuja?

  3. What measures can enhance the resilience of Abuja’s tourism sector to future crises?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Crises do not significantly impact Abuja’s tourism sector.

  2. Existing crisis management strategies do not significantly mitigate the effects of crises on tourism businesses in Abuja.

  3. There are no significant measures to enhance the resilience of Abuja’s tourism sector to future crises.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on the tourism sector in Abuja, particularly businesses directly affected by crises, such as hotels, travel agencies, and tour operators. It excludes informal tourism activities and non-tourism sectors indirectly affected by crises. Limitations include challenges in accessing data from small-scale tourism operators and the potential bias in self-reported crisis management practices.
